The First BarCamp Experiment in Italy

The BarCamp (based on the tradition of Stanford University in Palo Alto) is a collaborative non-conference (unconference) where anyone can "step up to the podium", suggest a topic and then talk about it to others, with a view to promoting free thinking, curiosity, circulation and dissemination of ideas.

The BarCamp is driven by those taking part, also known as BarCampers. No one is an onlooker and everyone contributes to the success of the event by presenting an idea by means of a video, a PowerPoint presentation or a paper, taking part in the discussion or helping out with the organisation. BarCamps do not have a strict running order of contributors or topics to be covered.

The LUISS BarCamp was an event open to everyone and for this reason it offered itself as a new way of comparing, for sharing and learning in an open environment, through an enlarged audience of participants using a single formula: Speed=Space/Time broken down into nine sessions.

THE BARCAMP WAS A COLLABORATIVE NON-CONFERENCE WHERE ANYONE WAS FREE TO "STEP UP TO THE PODIUM" TO SUGGEST A TOPIC AND TALK ABOUT IT TO OTHERS, WITH A VIEW TO PROMOTING FREE THINKING, CURIOSITY, CIRCULATION AND DISSEMINATION OF IDEAS.

SPEED = SPACE/TIME

Using a single formula to interview the present.
This was the goal of the LUISS BarCamp 2009.

Speed, space and time determine the dynamics of: businesses, institutions, the environment and any form of human expression. Three variables and endless applications for meeting the challenge of a sustainable future.

The Topics

Session one

Sessione 1

THE SHAREHOLDING EMPLOYEE
The sharing of employees in the company's profits. It seems like new topic. In reality it’s a very old issue with regard to the theory, and one that has been discussed repeatedly within the Italian legal system, beginning with the Fascist corporate system. In another context Article 46 of the Italian Constitution recognises the rights of workers to participate in the running of companies. The speed of time now brings us to the year 2009. What was being discussed was a draft law, as a contribution to a possible bi-partisan solution. Is the time ripe? Is it a major reform or a headlong flight? How to evaluate this possible breakthrough?

Session two

Sessione 2

NEW RULES FOR A NEW FINANCIAL MARKET
"The financial crisis has brought to light the inadequacy of the rules that were designed to ensure the smooth functioning of the markets. This also highlights the need to reaffirm the ethical basis for the correctness and integrity of economic action ". The system of rules on the transparency and functioning of finance and the global economy: an open discussion between all stakeholders in the economic/finance sector, which had as its subject not only the fundamentals but also the practical arrangements for their application.

Session three

Sessione 3

THINKING AND DOING: speed of thought and the timing of political decisions
The first big meeting in Italy of our nation's most influential think tanks.
A multipartisan event for conducting a joint analysis of the speed of change, on the spaces for action and on the reaction time of parties and institutions. For a view on the thinking and the doing of Italian politics. A container of how many and what ideas?

Session four

Sessione 4

THE INSTITUTIONS' "GOALS"
Politics and institutions in recent years appear to have discovered the dimension of "time": the pace set by the globalisation of markets, the speed of communication and the scope of the crisis all call for simple, effective and prompt solutions. The government rides along on a permanent urgency that appears to delegitimise Parliament's role and authority. In the ring of the institutional system, decentralisation and internationalism are pitted against each other, and there are cries of "to the market" and a renewed "savior" State. What are the optimum space and the "efficient" times for the decision?

Session five

Sessione 5

GRID PARITY: BETWEEN GREEN INVESTMENTS AND GREEN JOBS
Economic advantage and externalities in investments in the renewable energy sector: the prospect of long term sustainability, beyond the incentives. An open discussion among all key players in the energy sector. Beyond the myths or prejudices about green energy, a concrete perspective on the opportunities offered by the sector, to avoid creating a new "green bubble" and correctly guide political choices in a particularly delicate moment for the Italy's economy and that of the world.

Session six

Sessione 6

INFRASTRUCTURES, OUTSIDE OF THE TUNNEL
What processes and tools are to be put in place to provide specific timelines and a guaranteed outcome for the creation of strategic Italian infrastructures? What will be the fate for unfinished works?
The infrastructural gap: an opportunity to debate, to stimulate new ideas and solutions between laws, state powers and local powers of veto, public spending limits and alternative means of funding, the quality of public planning and the skills of the private sector.

Session seven

Sessione 7

THE OTHER IRAN
While the regime of Mullahs turned 30, in the streets of Tehran successive demonstrations and parades of young people and women are calling for democracy and civil rights. The powerful misinformation on the issue and the omissions of the foreign press often highlight the construction of another Iran, almost always in the shadows, but one that, inside and beyond the borders of the Persian nation, contemplates the future of its people. This session of BarCamp, with input from representatives of the Iranian Resistance, discussed Iranian political scenarios and the stance of Western countries towards the regime.

Session eight

Sessione 8

BETWEEN THE LANGUAGE OF THE NETWORKS AND PEOPLE'S WORDS
The language of the networks - be they of people or virtual - increasingly calls for a situation of shared rules capable of ensuring their survival and evolution. The generation of wealth in the networks and the distribution of this among the various affiliated entities, will change the habits of the individual user. Ergo, how much wealth - economic and cognitive - is the network actually capable of generating? And who will be the judge called upon to pass judgement on its parameters of reliability and legitimacy?

Special BarCamp

Sessione 9

GLOBAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP WEEK (GEW)
"Global Entrepreneurs is what one becomes. To beat the crisis: even in Italy? "
At the conclusion of the GEW, there was a session dedicated to a meeting between operators and policy makers on how to prepare new competitive strategies for our businesses, involving the brains, the capital and the institutions. A time to debate, on the basis of the authentic testimonies of the protagonists of change, and an opportunity to present a series of new initiatives dedicated to the birth of a new figure, the global entrepreneur.

A great success
